Round 9 Souths

GPS down spirited Souths
GPS have defeated a spirited Souths 38-17 in their round nine encounter of the Strategic Airlines Premier Rugby competition at Chipsy wood Oval.

Boosted by the presence of St. George Reds Flanker Beau Robinson, who played only the first 40 minutes on his return from injury, Souths were unable to beat the top four Jeeps.

GPS once again raced out of the blocks with a converted try to fly-half Pat Smith inside the first ten minutes following a line-out in attacking territory.

With both sides making unforced errors, it made for a sometimes scrappy encounter but it was GPS who were next to cross the line with centre Namila Davui scoring before Smith converted once again to give GPS a 14-0 half-time lead.

With Robinson going off at the break, Souths had to look elsewhere for inspiration and it was provided in the form of fellow flanker Ged O'Hare who scored a second-half double but not before the lead had been extended to 26-0 with another two GPS tries.

Number 8 Gavin Murphy scored for Jeeps in the corner after some heavy attacking pressure left Souths on the back foot and then fullback Josh Logan added the bonus point try after a quick break by winger Byron Roberts from inside his own half.

It was then, with the game seemingly all over, that Souths attempted to mount a comeback. Number 8 Rob Greer scored the first points of the afternoon for Souths but fullback Chris Fields could not convert which left the score at 26-5.

O'Hare then grabbed his first to bring the score back to 26-12 after Fields converted this time.

With Souths looking on a bit of run, substitute Jake Milne scored and then converted to put the game all but out of reach for the spirited Souths side.

O'Hare completed his double in almost the identical spot as his first try but it wasn't enough as another substitute in Ben Wood put the icing on the cake for Jeeps with a try in the final act of the game.

QAS Reds Academy scrumhalf Nick Frisby turned in another good performance for GPS in a good battle with Souths halfback Brent Hamlin.

GPS assistant coach Anthony Mathison said things were starting to come together for GPS but was disappointed with the three tries conceded in the second half.

"It was a pretty reasonable win," said Mathison.

"We played some of our better footy for this year at times.

"It was disappointing to concede those late points, it's something we've already spoken about."

Mathison said he was happy with the performances leading into the second half of the year.

"We're starting to play some good footy and score some points which is good," he said.

Souths Coach Brett Whalley said he was happy with the effort shown but said his team needed to improve.

"There was good spirit in the team but we made too many mistakes, particularly missed tackles and turnovers," Whalley said.

‘The first try was too easy and we gave them some easy points."

Whalley also praised the influence of Robinson on his team, especially the younger members.

"He's a great influence, particularly for the younger guys, of which we have a few," he said.
