Round 4 Sunnybank

GPS snaps Sunnybank's three-game winning streak

GPS has snared another major scalp in the Strategic Airlines Queensland Premier Rugby competition by beating an imposing Sunnybank Dragons team 16-15 at Oldmac Oval.

The Gallopers backed up their upset victory over 2010 Premiers University a fortnight ago by overcoming a Dragons forward pack which included St.George Reds players Albert Anae, Greg Holmes, Adam Wallace-Harrison and Leroy Houston.

A pair of tries to GPS winger Chris Kuridrani in the first half, including one resulted from a blocked kick, set the tone for the visitors as they went into the sheds up 13-3.

Sunnybank fought back bravely in the second half but couldn't close the margin as the young Gallopers team showed enough composure to close out the match and in doing so highlighting their strong premiership credentials.

The Dragons had a chance to win the game in the final minute but a long-range drop goal attempt fell short.

"All I said to the guys was we need to stick to the plan in place and do the basics well," GPS coach Matt Pini said.

"We have some really good young kids- we got an 18 year old second rower, two 20 year old props. The effort was magnificent, I couldn't be more proud of them.

"But you can see with a young team; one week is good, one week is bad. That's where we have to improve as a side, trying to level it out and make sure we play with consistency each week."

Sunnybank coach Rob Nowlan said turnovers in the opening half stifled their offensive flow.

"If you don't get any possession, and if you don't get any flow to the game, you don't get to use those big runners, which is our strength. We just played into their hands with all these stop, start, stop, start. We couldn't get any flow on," Nowlan said.

As for the next week's blockbuster match-up against the defending champion University, coach Nowlan believes his team has more work to do.

"We just got to stop making silly mistakes. We will work hard in training to make sure we will execute and play our game."
