Round 18 Souths

Big win earns finals spot for GPS

GPS have defeated Souths 48-7 at Yoku Road on Saturday afternoon to claim the last finals berth in the Strategic Airlines Queensland Premier Rugby competition.

GPS needed favourable results elsewhere as well as a big win themselves to claim the final place in the top four and they held up their end of the bargain.

For Souths however, the game was all about pride and they certainly came to play displaying some physical defence early on. Despite the effort, it was GPS who would run away with the victory, claiming a four-point bonus try in the process.

It didn't take long for the home side to get going as they scored just after the ten-minute mark when winger Byron Roberts stepped inside his opponent following a neat cut out pass by flyhalf Patrick Smith.

Shortly after, GPS fullback Josh Logan made a good break from the halfway line before he was brought down by Souths fullback Andrew Muirhead in a great piece of defence but the Souths defence was in a scramble following the break and Namila Davui crossed the line to extend the lead to 10-0.

Souths were not without their own opportunities but a combination of errors and good defence meant that GPS would be the only team to hit the scoreboard in the first half, their lead expanded again when Jean Pierre Smith crashed his way over near the posts.

Leading 17-0 when play resumed for the second half, GPS got off to a sloppy start after Smith's re-start rolled dead. However, despite the mistake it would be Jeeps who would be next to score, Jean Pierre Smith the beneficiary of some fine stepping from Winger Todd Winkley who danced his way around several opponents to make a break before Smith crashed over to capitalise on Winkley's work.

Souths were still fighting hard despite the scoreboard and inside centre Adney Anitema made several strong runs and caused problems for the opposition defence by running good lines and showing some strength when taking the ball into contact.

GPS then extended their lead out to 38-0 with tries to Mitch Carpenter and captain Jono Ellis who both forced their way over from close to the line.

Anitema then got a well deserved consolation try with ten minutes remaining following some scrappy play in the forwards before the ball came out to the backs quickly which opened up the space for Anatima to get Souths' first points of the day.

GPS' Daniel Gorman then got in on the act by crashing his way over the line in a similar fashion to Ellis and Carpenter but the most spectacular try would be saved for last.

GPS inside Centre James Herbert created an overlap down the left on halfway and passed to Winkley, who raced down the touchline and proceeded to pass inside for Logan who acrobatically touched the ball down in the corner with the rest of his body in mid air, heading into touch.

Post game GPS coach Matt Pini said he was just happy his side won the game and let the other results sort themselves out.

"Our whole focus was just to finish off the season well," Pini said. "We came here today to worry about our own backyard and let whatever happens happen."

Pini said overall he was happy with the win and was looking forward to finals, particularly with the possible return of inspirational flanker Mogi Wei.

"We played some good footy and some bad footy but overall pretty good," he said.

"It (finals footy) steps up a bit and the pace steps up a bit but at the end of the day it's another game of footy."

Souths coach Brett Whalley said he pleased with his team's physicality and effort, particularly given there was little riding on the result for Souths but said his team paid the price for their errors.

"We just made too many errors in the first half which gave them a lead," Whalley said.

"From there we were playing catch-up and threw the ball around, did some risky stuff and they capitalised on it.

"It was very physical and I think there are a few sore bodies.

"The boys didn't stop trying so I was definitely happy with that but we just weren't good enough."

GPS 48 (J. Pierre Smith 2, B. Roberts, N. Davui, M. Carpenter, J. Ellis, D. Gorman & J. Logan tries; P. Smith 4 cons) def. South Brisbane 7 (A. Anatima try; C. Field con).
