Round 13 Sunshine Coast
Sharp Stingrays fall short of GPS
GPS has moved in the top four after having defeated Sunshine Coast 13-6 in a tight and tense encounter at Yoku Road in round 14 of the Strategic Airlines Queensland Premier Rugby competition.
Both sides fielded players with international experience with the Stingrays boasting former All Black Caleb Ralph in the centres and GPS enjoying the services of St.George Reds No.8 Radike Samo, who has six caps for the Wallabies.
Sunshine Coast brought great intensity to the contest but the class of the Jeeps got them over line in the end.
Coming off two tough matches from the previous two weeks, GPS appeared flat at times throughout the match and they conceded the first points when Akeem Williams-Coveney put the visitors ahead through a penalty.
Sunshine Coast weren't afraid to take a risk with the ball in hand and several chip and chase kicks had the GPS defence scrambling, but it was the Jeeps who would put the next set of points on the board with flyhalf Patrick Smith levelling the scores at 3-all from a penalty.
Both sides continued to throw the ball around when the opportunity presented which made for some entertaining rugby at times but neither team could take the lead before half-time and it remained at 3-all at the break.
GPS came close to scoring when winger Byron Roberts was taken into touch just short of the line but they would break the deadlock soon after, the boot of Patrick Smith once again successful from a penalty.
The visitors levelled the score once again with Williams-Coveney successful with another penalty attempt and it looked like it would take something special to separate the two teams.
That was exactly what would separate the teams in the end as GPS loosehead prop Jean-Pierre Smith made a brilliant break from half-way through a strong run and drew the final defender before passing inside to send James Herbert over the line for the match-winner.
GPS Coach Matt Pini said after the match he was just happy to get the win but admitted his team had some areas to work on.
"Yeah, just happy to get the four points," Pini said.
"I don't think we showed them enough respect and they played very well."
Pini said his team needed to stick to their plans better as well.
"We didn't actually play to our game plan which was disappointing. We didn't respect the ball," he said.
Stingrays Coach Brett Picone, who only recently took up the role after former Wallaby Toutai Kefu departed to join the Tongan coaching panel for the world cup, said bad decision making once again cost his team.
"It was disappointing to lose," Picone said.
"Once again we cost ourselves, just through some bad decision making. It's something we've done all year."
Picone said he couldn't fault his team's effort however.
"The effort was there, the intensity was great and there's a lot of positives to come out of today," he said.
"We were against a team that's fighting for a top four spot and we really gave it to them today. I was really proud of the boys."
